The shuttle Columbia is set for launch on a 17-day Spacehab science mission carrying diverse mi-crogravity and educational payloads, along with Israel's first astronaut―a situation forcing the most intensive security measures against terrorist attack ever implemented for a U.S.-space mission. The flight is scheduled for liftoff Jan. 16, between 10 a.m.-2 p.m. EST, into a 150-naut.-mi. orbit inclined 39 deg. The shuttle is "considered a high-value target opportunity that terrorists view as a great way to make a statement," NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe said (AW&ST June 10, 2002, p. 26). "There is no question [the shuttle] is a high-value target. It has been identified as such by all the intelligence information that we have received post-Sept 11," he said in mid-2002.
