Continental Airlines lost $109 million in the fourth quarter of 2002 and $451 million for the year, and senior officials predict further bloodletting throughout 2003 as yields remain weak and fuel costs rise. "We had a number of roadblocks in 2002 that prevented us from returning to profitability, and we will continue to face the same issues this year ... but at some point capacity will meet demand," said Gordon Bethune, chairman and CEO. He said public fears about a war with Iraq, coupled with increased costs associated with security at airports are further exacerbating economic problems for the carrier. In addition, Bethune said he is disappointed with the slow pace of the Transportation Dept.'s handling of a proposed code-share alliance be- tween Continental, Northwest and Delta Air Lines that could boost revenues. Department officials are deciding whether to block the pact because of its potential effect on competition.
