Lufthansa Technik is continuing its international expansion through additional joint ventures and is likely to make a major move into the Rolls-Royce engine maintenance business in the next few months. The airline recently inaugurated its latest joint venture, an arrangement with with Air Malta. Lufthansa Technik Malta, 51% owned by Lufthansa Technik, will focus on C-checks for Boeing 737s and Airbus A320-series aircraft. The subsidiary, based at Malta's international airport, will eventually be tasked with all C-check work on narrow-body fleets for Lufthansa and Air Malta, but is also seeking third-party work from other European, Middle Eastern and African carriers. The Malta joint venture was preceded late last year by Lufthansa Technik Budapest which has started overhauling 737s for Lufthansa Technik customers. The facility is 85% owned by the German concern, while Hungarian airline Malev has a 15% stake.
