In a bid to quickly destroy elusive threats, U.S. Air Force researchers are considering the development of a category of weapons that would be lying in wait, ready to attack fleeting targets rather than having to wait for surveillance aircraft to detect them and call in a raid. Striking mobile targets, such as ballistic missile launchers, has presented service planners with massive problems, because targets often manage to escape by the time intelligence assets have detected them, commanders have processed the data and strike aircraft deliver ordnance. Developers at the service's Air Armaments Center at Eglin AFB, Fla., are now proposing an entirely different method to attack the problem: employ weapons that can monitor an area and, when a target appears, strike immediately using onboard smarts or when commanded by operators in a remote location.
