Boeing Targets Its 7E7 At Mid-Market Gap

Boeing intends to effectively cede the new large aircraft launch-market to Airbus over the next decade as it focuses on what it calls, for the moment, the 7E7, designed to fill its middle-of-the-market requirement. The company aims to define the aircraft's configuration during the next six months. The 7Efficient7 (7E7) emerged from the debris of the Sonic Cruiser program at the end of 2002, in part as a direct replacement for the current 767 family. Boeing is now exploring the configuration options, with an eye to getting airlines to commit to the program by the first quarter of 2004. First flight could come as early as mid-2006, with an entry into service targeted for 2008. Randy Baseler, vice president of marketing for Boeing Commercial Aircraft, made it clear during a recent briefing in London that the company would not fund in parallel both the middle-of-the-market aircraft, the 7E7, and an all-new successor to the 747.
