European airlines continue in a waiting mode for fleet development and may take significant short-term steps to reduce capacity in the wake of the ongoing economic slowdown and a possible war in Iraq. Several of the continent's major carriers have delayed fleet decisions until at least later this year and are revising their requirements, as they ground more aircraft and defer deliveries, making life for manufacturers Boeing and Airbus even more difficult. In addition to the current traffic slump, the influence of low-cost new entrants make fleet requirements hard to predict; however, major orders particularly in the regional jet sector are expected as soon as the second half of this year.
