摘要

Marine Corps CH-53Es are suffering serious sand-induced engine problems in operations in Iraq, repeating an experience the service endured 12 years ago during the 1991 Persian Gulf war. In the earlier conflict, the Marine Corps had to replace an average of 6.7 CH-53E engines per 1,000 flight hours largely because of sand ingestion. Despite much discussion after the fact about ameliorating the situation, no progress appears to have been made. "I would anticipate [replacements] being higher this time because the engines are 12 years older," said Marine Maj. Tim Herrington, aviation logistics officer for the Marine Air Group MAG-16.
