What began as a series of training drills between Scandinavian countries in the far north has evolved into one of Europe's largest aerial exercises. Across four airbases in Finland, Norway and Sweden, 140 fighters, tankers, transport and other support aircraft from nine countries have gathered for the biennial Arctic Challenge Exercise (ACE) held May 22-June 4. The interoperability of NATO and non-NATO neutral states against near-peer threats-not unlike neighboring Russia-are being demonstrated and honed. The exercise encompasses a huge swath of northern Sweden with vast tracts of airspace-including the large Vidsel weapons-testing range-free of commercial traffic and dwarfing the ranges available for the Red Flag exercises in Nevada. The scale of the airspace available is of particular interest to the U.S., with senior NATO officials calling for the establishment of a so-called flag exercise in the region.
