It was a tough decision, but one that had to be made. Early this month, with flight tests of the 777-9 approaching, Boeing and General Electric were confronted with a mechanical failure on a GE9X engine that left no option but to postpone the big day. It was a bitter pill to swallow, particularly as the first engine starts on the initial development aircraft, WH001, had just been accomplished on May 29. The scene looked set for the flight campaign to finally get underway. But with all development margin long gone, first deliveries are now likely to slide into late 2020, several months later than originally planned. Although some details have yet to be confirmed, signs point to sometime around the start of June when an "anomaly" was detected in the forward part of the 11-stage high-pressure compressor on a GE9X that was undergoing one of the final batch of certification tests. The problem, which has not been specified, was not associated with the certification test itself or the related conditions under which the test was being run.
