The big block-letter sculpture in front of the company's headquarters proclaims "Embraer 50," commemorating its founding on Aug. 19,1969. But the celebrations this summer will be bittersweet. If all goes according to plan, the sprawling facility where Embraer was born will soon have a new owner and name: Boeing Brasil-Commercial. Boeing's $4.2 billion deal to buy an 80% stake in Embraer's commercial business means big changes for the iconic Brazilian aviation pioneer. Born as an inefficient government entity, it was privatized and became an innovative regional jet pioneer in the 1990s. A decade later, the company successfully launched a larger family of airliners, selling 1,500 E-Jets to operators in 50 countries. Now Embraer must reinvent itself once again. Embraer's sales, just over $5 billion in 2018, will be cut by more than half after the company turns over its commercial aviation lines and a big chunk of its services and support business to Boeing Brasil-Commercial. And while many details are still being sorted out, a majority of the company's 18,000 employees-including more than half of its nearly 6,000 engineers-will fall under Boeing Brasil. The deal, which has been approved by shareholders but still requires regulatory sign-offs, is expected to close by year-end.
