France is preparing to standardize its helicopter fleets with a new rotorcraft to serve all three of the country's armed forces. Under the Helicoptere Interarmees Leger (HIL)-Joint Light Helicopter-program, France will buy 169 military versions of the Airbus H160, the company's new twin-engine commercial helicopter slated to enter the market in 2020. The H160M military version, to be known as Gue-pard (French for cheetah), is envisaged to replace five fleets with a single type. Deliveries were planned for 2028, but French Defense Minister Florence Parly pushed to adjust defense funding and advance the introduction, allowing France to accelerate the retirement of older fleets, she said in Marseille May 27. Officials also added 15 more aircraft to the requirement. The program will now be formally launched in 2021; Airbus will fly prototypes of the H160M in 2023, and first deliveries will take place in 2026, with the aircraft expected to be in service for around 40 years.
