HYDROGEN HAS REENTERED THE aviation lexicon as governments and in-dustry look for ways to reduce the environmental impact of air transport. While turbine-powered airliners burning liquid hydrogen and generating zero emissions remain a distant dream, there is a nearer-term option: fuel cells.NASA investigated fuel cells for electric propulsion in the mid-2000s, but they were too heavy at 0.3 kW/kg. Now the latest hydrogen fuel cells in cars such as Toyota's Mirai have specific power exceeding 2 kW/kg, making them practical alternatives to batteries for smaller aircraft.Like batteries, fuel cells produce zero emissions in operation, yet they have higher energy density, which can provide greater range for all-electric air taxis and regional airliners. The technology is less mature and more expensive than batteries, but that is changing as the automotive industry embraces fuel cells.
