Norwegian aerospace and defense company Nammo is working with the European Space Agency (ESA) to help industrialize flight-proven hybrid-propulsion technology for the development of a family of low-cost, responsive sounding rockets and small-payload launch vehicles. The venture, known as the North Star launch family, builds on the successful launch of the company's Nucleus technology demonstrator sounding rocket from Andoya Space Center in northern Norway in September 2018. The flight, which reached an apogee of more than 107 km (66.5 mi.), marks the first time a Norwegian-built rocket has reached space, exceeding the internationally recognized 100-km-high von Karman line that marks the upper boundary of Earth's atmosphere."Everything went smoothly, and we achieved an altitude slightly above what we had planned for," said Martina Faenza, senior propulsion engineer for Nammo Aerospace Propulsion, on Aug. 19 at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics' Propulsion and Energy conference in Indianapolis. She added that the success of the test keeps the company on track to enable a "niche market for space access." Her comments were part of a presentation updating progress on the North Star technology demonstrator and follow-on program.
