NASA Advances UTM Concept With Dual Drone Flight Demonstrations

Results from NASA's Unmanned Aircraft Systems Traffic Management (UTM) project point to the complexity of managing small drone operations at low altitudes.The space and aeronautics agency completed successive rounds of drone flight demonstrations in two U.S. cities on Aug. 23 using a UTM construct for traffic management. The technical capability level 4 (TCL 4) testing in urban settings represents the final phase of the NASA effort; advancing UTM now shifts to the FAA. Ten days of demonstrations each in Reno, Nevada, in June-July and Corpus Christi, Texas, in August resulted in no drone collisions with buildings or injuries to people. But testing also revealed ongoing challenges to low-altitude drone traffic management."All the previous TCL testing had been done in rural environments. We expected there would be challenges with interference, command and control, issues with GPS navigation, microweather in urban canyons and things like that," says Ron Johnson, UTM project manager at NASA Ames Research Center. "Some of that was borne out."
