Japan's major airlines have been granted valuable new growth opportunities at Tokyo's Haneda Airport, which will underpin the carriers' plans to accelerate their international expansion next year.Half of the 50 new Haneda slots opened by the Japanese government have been earmarked for local airlines All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Japan Airlines (JAL). While the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) has designated which international markets the slots must be used for, the airlines are now finalizing the specific routes they will fly. These likely will be announced later this year.The Haneda expansion aligns with a national strategy to boost tourism. The government has set a goal of 40 million international visitors to Japan in 2020, versus 30 million in 2018. ANA and JAL have limited their capacity growth in recent years and have been targeting 2020 to ramp up expansion. Tokyo is hosting the 2020 Summer Olympics in July and August next year.
