To Royal Air Force pilots in the 1920s, gremlins were mischievous creatures that sabotaged aircraft. To DARPA, they are unmanned aircraft that can be launched from host platforms to wreak havoc on enemy defenses, then snatched up midair and returned to base for reuse.Now DARPA's Gremlins program has itself been "gremlined," disrupted by earthquakes in July in California that heavily damaged the China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station where flight tests were planned.While China Lake is working to restore operations, DARPA is looking at alternative locations to test the Gremlins system, which is being developed by Dynetics. "We are ready to fly," says Tim Keeter, Dynetics deputy program manager. But flight tests of the Lockheed Martin C-130-mounted airborne recovery system with the Kratos-developed X-61A Gremlin unmanned aircraft have been delayed by the earthquake damage.
