With an eye to defending its airspace from attacks, Japan plans to modify two of its helicopter carriers to carry Lockheed Martin F-35B fighters. The ships-Izumo and Kaga-should be operated as soon as possible, the defense ministry says, given the nation's inadequate fighter coverage over the Pacific Ocean.The ministry's budget request for the fiscal year beginning in April 2020 includes ¥3.1 billion ($29 million) for the partial refitting of Izumo. There is no published timetable for completion. Also, the Parliament has not approved the funding for beginning the work.
