The UK is investing in the development of a cluster of high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites in a bid to expand its intelligence-gathering capabilities in space.Building on Britain's extensive experience in the development of smallsats and SAR, the UK Defense Science Technology Laboratory (DSTL) believes the form factors and costs associated with such platforms can be scaled down from more monolithic platforms with the aim of putting a cost-effective military SAR capability in orbit by 2025.The vision for Oberon- named after the king of the fairies in Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream"-is to use a cluster of satellites of a yet-to-be-determined number.
