THE REGIONAL MARKET, IF DEFINED as transports with fewer than 90 seats, has been declining for many years, punctuated by product- and demand-driven cycles. In 2004,30-/90-seat aircraft represented 15.7% of all transport deliveries by value; by 2018, this had fallen to just 3.8%. There are very few signs that the market will recover by more than a few percent. Bombardier and Embraer, the two biggest regional jet players, have responded to this downturn by growing the top end of their product lines upmarket, well into the mainline jet segment and away from the true regional "feeder" market. They have also sold majority stakes in these larger programs (C Series/A220 and E190/ E195-E2) to Airbus and Boeing, respectively.
