FREDRIC ARNOLD WAS AMONG the early modern business aviation practitioners. He operated one of the first Cessna 310 twins in the 1950s, eventually progressing to a Cessna 401 and later a pressurized 421. And true to the segment, he did most of his flying in the furtherance of his myriad business interests. While a teenager, he made a good living as an artist and continued creating all manner of art as an adult. Naturally inventive, he also fashioned what was apparently the first aluminum folding beach chair and ultimately formed a company that turned out 14,000 of them daily. Beyond that, while raising his family in Los Angeles, he acted in more than 20 Hollywood films, authored a well-received novel, Doorknob Five Two, and was a popular public speaker. Says Marc Arnold, his father lived large "for those who never had the chance." And that is the real story. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, the then 19-year-old Arnold was spurred to action, enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was assigned to flight school to learn to pilot the fearsome P-38 Lightning twin-engine fighter but told his pacifist parents he was set to become an instructor, which he knew was untrue.
