U.S. Army FARA Project Tackles Acquisition and Technology Hurdles

Five unique approaches to solving the decades-old riddle of designing a relatively high-speed, lightweight and vertical-lift aircraft to perform the uniquely dangerous armed scout mission will compete to build the U.S. Army's prototype for the Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA). The selected bidders-AVX/L3, Bell, Boeing, Karem Aircraft and Lockheed Martin/Sikorsky-embrace a diversity of approaches to vertical lift such as coaxial rotors and possibly tiltrotors, and high-speed forward flight, including pusher propellers and ducted fans. The awards for the prototype design phase also reflect the Army's willingness to consider ideas from innovative small companies like AVX and Karem with no proven experience in aircraft production, as well as the U.S. rotorcraft industry's "Big Three." The Army's carefully sculpted competition of ideas and business models also will test the service's ability to avoid the same missteps in the acquisition process that have felled a series of attempts to field a replacement for the "interim" Bell OH-58 armed scout fleet since 1967.
