Challenges in multinational cooperation are slowing progress in Sino-Russian development of the CR29, industry sources close to the program say. The Craic consortium of Comac and United Aircraft Corp. (UAC) now expects to take almost two years to choose an engine for the widebody airliner, says one of the sources. A trend toward preponderant Chinese influence in the program evident two years ago seems to be continuing. China may make the carbon-fiber wing, even though UAC has special expertise in the area. Comac is already working on development of the carbon-fiber fuselage and has built a sample barrel.
