摘要

Designing parachute systems is hard enough without skipping a step in the rigging process, as happened during preparations for Boeing's first CST-100 Starliner test flight, which nonetheless successfully demonstrated the capsule's escape and landing systems that would carry a crew to safety if their launch vehicle failed. On the long road to restoring human orbital spaceflight capabilities to the U.S.-a service in hiatus since the retirement of the space shuttles in 2011-Boeing's misconfigured parachute rigging proved to be among the easiest problems to track down and resolve. The Starliner team quickly homed in on the cause of the failure: an error in assembling the rigging line between one of the three main parachutes and its pilot chute. The pilots fire out from a mortar and inflate to pull out the main chutes.
