摘要

One sign of how far NASA is willing to go in its quest to land astronauts on the Moon in 2024-four years earlier than previously planned-came during the agency's announcement of design contracts for human lunar landing systems. NASA revealed that the lunar-orbiting Gateway, intended to be the building block for an international collaboration to explore and exploit the Moon, was unlikely to be part of the architecture for the first crewed landing. "The Gateway is important for a sustainable architecture," NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine told reporters on April 30. "But it also is important to note that we have the priority to get to the Moon by 2024, and we believe that does not require the Gateway. In fact, I would go as far as to say it's not likely that we will use the Gateway for the 2024 mission." Lead architect for the revamped Moon plan, ordered by the Trump administration in March 2019, has been space policy guru Douglas Loverro, whom Bridenstine recruited last year after sidelining longtime spaceflight chief William Gerstenmaier.
