Sitting side by side in the front row of SpaceX's flight control room in Hawthorne, California, Elon Musk and Gwynne Shotwell, the company's top executives, kept a wary eye on radio signals coming down from the Crew Dragon capsule as it plunged through the atmosphere, carrying people home from orbit for the first time. The Aug. 2 reentry, parachute descent and splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico were the final steps of a 64-day demonstration mission that had unfolded flawlessly-from launch on May 30 to rendezvous and docking at the International Space Station (ISS) a day later and two months in orbit attached to the front of the laboratory's Harmony node. The last crew to use that port were the STS-135 astronauts on the final space shuttle mission nine years ago. NASA hired SpaceX and Boeing in 2014 to develop and operate privately owned space taxis that could ferry crews to and from the ISS after the shuttles were retired, alleviating dependence on Russia for launch services.
