A British startup is proposing the use of a hydrogen-fuel-cell-powered, high-altitude, long-endurance aircraft to provide a cost-effective complement to future 5G cellular networks. Stratospheric Platforms Ltd. (SPL) believes its 3.5-metric-ton, 60-m-wing-span (200-ft.) unmanned platform- operating above 60,000 ft. for up to nine days at a time-could be cost competitive with the creation of a terrestrial network and its associated land rents. The rollout of high-bandwidth 5G networks, which is an enabling technology for self-driving cars and the so-called Internet of Things, requires significantly more terrestrial cellular base stations than earlier 3G and 4G cellular services.
