At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic last spring, when massive numbers of aircraft suddenly were grounded, North American airlines made a beeline for cargo in an attempt to blunt their massive and unexpected declines in revenue. Some of those operators continue to see their freight revenue grow and are moving to seize business opportunities they have identified. In the early days of the pandemic, when passenger load factors plummeted to 20-30%, airlines such as American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines and even Southwest Airlines turned to cargo as demand for the transport of medical and personal protective equipment (PPE) grew substantially due to a disruption in the global supply chain.
