espite broad satisfaction with the intelligence flow from three F/A-18D squadrons providing battlefield reconnaissance, U.S. Marine Corps officials realize they need to fix reliability and improve timeliness to make the system more valuable for future conflicts. In addition to simply remedying problems with the current iteration of the Advanced Tactical Airborne Reconnaissance System (Atars), Marine Corps representatives are considering fielding a hy-perspectral sensor to better defeat camouflage and deception techniques. The effort is still a "fledgling program," one official said, but an early test showed the potential product to be "phenomenal," said a Marine expert on Atars. However, there is some skepticism among reconnaissance experts about whether the camera can be accommodated in the F/A-18D nose where Atars is located.
