The Flight Safety Foundation and FAA are striving to improve non-precision instrument approaches by increasing the number of procedures featuring a constant descent angle in concert with traditional step-down fixes. According to the FSF, a recent study by the Netherlands' National Aerospace Laboratory determined that airline pilots conducting nonprecision approaches (NPAs) were 5.2 times more likely to have an accident than if they were flying a precision approach, which includes glideslope information for vertical guidance. As a result of the study, Dutch authorities now require that all international airports used by their airlines have precision approaches available.
