The British Defense Ministry intends to replenish its depleted submarine-launched cruise missile inventory by purchasing up to 105 of the U.S. Tactical Tomahawk. The Royal Navy fired a substantial number of its remaining Tomahawk Block Ⅲ missiles during the war with Iraq. The ministry has now begun the process of supplementing its remaining Block ⅢC inventory with the Block Ⅳ. The Block Ⅳ, or Tactical Tomahawk, is anticipated as entering service with the navy in 2006. Defense Ministry officials confirmed that the formal procedure is underway with Washington to acquire the Block Ⅳ through the U.S.' Foreign Military Sales mechanism. So far, Washington has approved the sale of the Tomahawk only to the U.K. In the past, both France and Israel have made unsuccessful overtures to acquire the weapon.
