A modified NASA space shuttle could deliver a fresh crew to the International Space Station as early as next April, following return to flight of the shuttle fleet next March, according to Administrator Sean O'Keefe. Senior shuttle program officials said last week they were pushing for a Mar. 11, 2004, launch date for the shuttle Atlantis on the STS-114 logistics mission to ISS, the beginning of a window that extends through Apr. 6. Daylight launches during that period will keep the external tank in enough light for photography to spot any loss of insulating foam like that believed to have caused the Feb. 1 Columbia accident. A mission then also would avoid low solar power levels, known as beta angle cutouts, while Atlantis is docked at the station. O'Keefe told space agency employees last week it is possible the shuttle mission after STS-114 would be able to deliver the Expedition 9 crew to the ISS. If the station partnership keeps to its recent practice of six-month crew rotations, Expedition 9 would be due on the station before the end of April 2004.
