Agreat number of aerospace and airline officials have chosen not to acknowledge that they will be facing a major workforce issue within the next 10 years. This is not just a problem of recruiting the scientists, engineers, mechanics and pilots needed by what we hope will become a resurgent industry. It is more an issue of the level of technical and management skills that will be needed to engineer growth in an industry that will have expanding challenges. Burying their heads in the sand in the face of the coming workforce problem is not surprising, as many managers are forced to concentrate on quarterly results and short-term goals. It's harder still for today's executives to look at the future workforce requirement when they know they will not be around when the shortage of technical talent becomes critical. While understandable, this shortsightedness is nonetheless unforgivable.
