摘要

The new U.S. Navy/Boeing Super Hornet is a remarkable jet in two ways. First, its versatility will allow the Navy to buy fewer types of planes for its aircraft carriers. Second, hundreds of Super Hornets are being bought at a time. In both cases, the result is big savings for the U.S. taxpayer. But the story of the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet goes quite a bit beyond savings. For one thing, it's a world-class combat aircraft in the fine tradition of its predecessor, the F/A-18A-D Hornet. The Super Hornet first saw combat a year ago over Afghanistan in Operation Enduring Freedom. The aircraft also saw action in Operation Iraqi Freedom, winning kudos from Navy crews. Half a dozen Navy squadrons fly the Super Hornet, with more to come.
