The National Imagery and Mapping Agency has been asked by U.S. Northern Command to develop a map of the United States made up of satellite images with a resolution of one meter. Commercial satellites are contributing to the effort, which would help speed responses to terrorist attacks. Classified "National Technical Means" satellites have been used as well. "We have a requirement from Northcom to cover the entire country with one-meter imagery," said Bert Beaulieu, director of NIMA's Office of the Americas. "That's all being done by the commercial satellite providers." He also said, "We're using tons of NTM [National Technical Means] still, and the unique capabilities that our clas- sified systems have," to help meet a range of homeland defense applications, presumably including mapping. "But commercial imagery is being used more and more all the time, and we look forward to them expanding their capacity in terms of the number of satellites and volume of data and, of course, improved accuracy and resolution as well."
