U.S. and Europe Work To Settle Their WTO Aircraft Subsidies Spat

Like so many "endless wars," the 17-year airliner manufacturing subsidy dispute between Europe, Airbus, the U.S. and Boeing finally could be set for a negotiated resolution. What such a settlement might look like remains up in the air, especially whether either side will provide remuneration. But it almost certainly will include mutually agreed de-escalation and an attempt to set standards that someday could be applied to the Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China (Comae) and its budding C919 narrowbody and C929 widebody programs. "Airbus and Boeing have already taken steps to move toward better compliance with World Trade Organization (WTO) guidelines by working with their host governments in Germany, France and Spain, as well as Washington state, to remove favorable interest rates and tax breaks," said Ole Moehr, associate director of the Atlantic Council's Geo Economics Center. "Now it's up to both companies, the European Commission and the U.S. Trade Representative to use this momentum to agree on a framework that governs civil aircraft financing going forward."
