Nearly two decades after a hijacked commercial airliner struck the Pentagon in the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil, military air defense systems are finally getting to the point where they can distinguish between a flock of birds and small unmanned aerial systems. A new software system for processing data may enable the U.S. and Canada to delay the purchase of upgraded radars for the North Warning System (NWS), which provides airspace surveillance to deter a missile attack from the Arctic region. This new system could eventually reduce the time it takes to respond to a terrorist incident or an aircraft hijacking, say officials from North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and U.S. Northern Command (Northcom).
