UK defense will invest in high technology as it pivots its focus to the Indo-Pacific region and China. But research and development funding for capabilities in cyber, unmanned systems, space, directed-energy weapons and hypersonics will come at a price, with dozens of aircraft being cut from the frontline inventory (see page 66). The casualties include the remainder of the Tranche 1 Eurofighter Typhoon fleet, their retirement brought forward to 2025 from 2030. The Royal Air Force's (RAF) Lockheed C-130 J Hercules will also be dropped by the end of 2023, with the tactical airlift mission transferred to the Airbus A400M. In addition, there will be a capability gap in airborne early warning of nearly two years, a result of the decision to retire the Boeing E-3D Sentry by year-end.
