French product development group Conseil & Technique has briefed Airbus on a design concept that could be used to modify an existing airliner such as the A320 to electric propulsion. In the IP2 concept (for Integrated Propellers for Plane), the underwing turbo-fans are removed and replaced by a pair of electrically driven contra-rotating fans encircling the aft fuselage. The clean wing allows more laminar flow to reduce drag, and the integrated fans ingest the boundary layer over the fuselage, extending laminar flow over the body of the aircraft. Conseil & Technique (C&T) has patented several composite components and motion control devices and worked with Airbus on developing the foil for the Oracle Team USA America's Cup racing yacht and producing the composite propellers for the City Airbus electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing vehicle. C&T's IP2 design also saves airframe weight by reducing the thrust asymmetry and resulting structural stresses if an engine fails during takeoff. If a wing-mounted turbofan fails, thrust must be increased on the other engine and the rudder deflected to counteract the asymmetry. This increases loads on the wing and tail.
