Manufacturers of composite materials predict that better product forms and fabrication processes exploiting the dramatic properties of fiber-reinforced materials are taking their industry into a new era, one of profitable long-term relationships with customers - notably airframe manufacturers that have come to appreciate composites not only for their performance but for their thrift. "Performance at any cost," say composites makers, is a bygone mantra. New techniques render composite parts cheaper than metals, they argue, and advocates clearly see an opportunity for composites to find wider applications as aircraft build rates show signs of growing again soon.
