Soft demand for new aircraft amid a global travel downturn and supporting the 737 MAX’s long-awaited return are no longer Boeing’s only major concerns, as increased global regulatory scrutiny and nagging production quality issues are wreaking havoc with its cornerstone twin-aisle 777X and 787 programs. Boeing’s Jan. 27 fourth-quarter earnings unveiling included the surprising revelation that its newest widebody, the 777-9, will not be certified until at least late 2023. The company also confirmed that 787 deliveries, halted since last October, have not resumed, largely due to enhanced post-production inspections and related rework.
