The push to equip more of the U.S. airline fleet with technology that takes advantage of new, satellite-based navigation could get a boost from government plans to spend billions on the country's infrastructure. Several industry groups have talked with U.S. transportation officials about supporting a program that would encourage airlines to add software and hardware to older aircraft-many of them regional jets. The upgrades would enable more aircraft to use FAA's NextGen air traffic management (ATM) capabilities that help optimize routings and approaches as well as increase airport capacity. The largest NextGen-related avionics program, requiring equipment that allow aircraft to broadcast their positions-automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast-was mandated for flying in certain airspace. While most current-generation aircraft are sufficiently equipped to leverage other satellite-based navigation benefits, many older models lack some useful capabilities. The NextGen Advisory Committee (NAC), an industry group the provides ATM-related recommendations to the FAA, has been evaluating the issue for months.
