A Boston-based startup is taking a new look at wing-in-ground-effect vehicles through the lens of distributed electric propulsion, advanced flight control and hydrofoil lifting surface technology. Regent is developing a 10-passenger zero-emission vehicle that will compete with high-speed ferries and regional aircraft for commuter travel between coastal cities. The startup already has provisional orders from several ferry operators and short-haul interisland airlines, says CEO Billy Thalheimer. Regent plans to have its all-electric seaglider on the market within five years. "We think we can have the first commercially viable wing-in-ground-effect [WIG] vehicle, solving the problems with existing technology-electric propulsion, flight controls and hydrofoils," he says.
