With the unveiling of the country's first indigenous fighter, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said the country is on course to become one of the seven top aerospace global powers by the end of the decade. Aerospace could become a "future growth engine" for the South Korean economy, Moon said April 9 as he lifted the veil on the prototype of the KF-21-the twin-engine combat aircraft that has emerged from the country's Korean Fighter eXperimental (KF-X) program. But the aircraft could also be a bellwether for future low-cost development. The current price tag for the KF-21 program is around $8 billion, a fraction of the cost of similar combat aircraft, notably the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.
