Stratolaunch returned its six-engine behemoth carrier aircraft to the skies over California on April 29, and-just as important for its high-speed test ambitions-the company has revealed significant progress in development of its first purpose-designed hypersonic vehicle. The carrier aircraft, named Roc, is targeted at initial operational capability in 2022 and is due to debut as demand for hypersonic testing capability rises to unprecedented levels. While this demand is predominantly led by potential U.S. military requirements for weapons and vehicle systems, Stratolaunch also expects to cater to the test needs of a new generation of emerging high-speed commercial and military transport projects.
