Hypersonic cruise missiles would graduate to the prototyping phase and hypersonic-glide-vehicle-tipped missiles would pass into production if Congress approves the Defense Department's newly unveiled fiscal 2022 budget proposal. The U.S. military lacks the Chinese and Russian arsenals of operational, hypersonic-speed cruise missiles and glide vehicles, but the Pentagon's budget proposal would-if a generally supportive Congress approves- authorize the purchase of the first 12 Lockheed Martin AGM-183A Air-Launched Rapid Response Weapons (ARRW), whose operating concept calls for loading six of the $13.4 million missiles onto a single Boeing B-52H or B-1B bomber.
