As reported in "Slow Going" (July 12-25, p. 14), Boeing's new 777X commercial airplane is nowhere close to being certified for flight or sale to airlines. Looking back at Boeing's design and certification failures over the last eight years, we see batteries in new 787 Dreamliners catching fire, flight control computers commanding 737 MAX jets to crash into the ground, refueling systems on KC-46 tankers that can't transfer fuel and a software glitch that prevented an unmanned Boeing test vehicle from reaching low Earth orbit, coming close to a "catastrophic spacecraft failure." Alan Mulally was president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes from 1998 to 2006. He successfully led the company through many endeavors and challenges, including the fledgling 777 program. But he was passed over to head the full company and subsequently went on to become CEO of the Ford Motor Co., where he accomplished great things before retiring in 2014. Unfortunately, I fear that Boeing will continue to struggle with financial, political, logistical and corporate issues under its current leadership. I wonder if Alan is enjoying his retirement-anybody have his phone number?
