Your editorial "It Is Time To Stand Up to China in Aviation" (June 25-July 11, p. 74) fails to recognize new realities. Capitalism, globalization and free trade have combined to restore China to its historic place as the manufacturer to the world. This has reestablished China, on a purchasing-power-parity basis, as the world's largest economy. And in the event of an armed conflict between the U.S. and China in the Taiwan Strait, the Chinese would beat the pants off the U.S. military. The West can no longer dictate to China as it became accustomed to doing during the "century of humiliation." You acknowledge that China has the right to develop an aerospace industry but only on a "level playing field." This ignores the near century of hot and cold wars that acted as a subsidy to the aerosapce and defense industry to create its current technology. The Chinese will be unconstrained by your demand.
