The UK's Civil Aviation Authority has promised to be a light-touch regulator of spaceflight, after the organization's responsibilities were extended toward the stars. As the nation's new space regulator, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is tasked with awarding licenses to UK-based or international companies that want to conduct launches from British soil after the UK's long-awaited Space Industry Regulations became law on July 29.On the same day, the UK's Air Accidents Investigation Branch also became the country's "space accident investigation authority," charged with leading safety investigations into spaceflight accidents in or over the UK. The new statutes pave the way for the UK to achieve its ambition of becoming the first European country to host satellite launches and grow its market share of the multi-billion-dollar international space market 10% by 2030.
