Changing U.S. Regional Fleets Favor Larger RJs and E-Jets

The air travel downturn of 2020-21 has accelerated a shift in the U.S. away from small regional jets to larger, dual-class aircraft in the 76-seat category, a trend that was underway long before anyone had heard of COVID-19. The 50-seat regional jet (RJ) was a game-changer in the early part of the current century. At the time, major airlines had negotiated relaxed scope clauses that gave them a competitive advantage over carriers that were restricted in the number of small RJs they could fly. Legacy airlines and their regional partners eagerly gobbled up large numbers of Bombardier CRJ-100/200s and Embraer ERJ-140/145s as they sought to overfly crowded hubs controlled by rivals that operated only turboprops and small numbers of RJs.
