The Asia-Pacific region's most openly kept airline secret is officially out. Qantas Airways intends to buy a 22.5% share in Air New Zealand, injecting $550 million into the cash-starved carrier, and the two will begin a wide-ranging strategic alliance. ANZ Chairman John Palmer greeted the announcement with a victory statement: "Only 12 months ago, Air New Zealand was faced with the very real prospect of bankruptcy. A brutal fact, but true. By being bold and decisive in terms of our domestic services we have staged a simply magnificent recovery and returned the airline to profit."
